NorthWestern Energy serves 337 communities in Montana, South Dakota and Yellowstone National Park with safe and reliable electricity. We serve natural gas to 202 communities in Montana, South Dakota and Nebraska.

We serve gas and electric to customers in the western two-thirds of Montana and eastern South Dakota. We also have gas service in Nebraska, and serve electricity to Yellowstone National Park.
We own and operate a diverse generation fleet of wind, water, natural gas and coal-fired resources and the high-voltage electric transmission system and distribution system. We also own and operate natural gas production, transmission and distribution systems.

Our Hydro Facilities
Our carbon-free hydro system is the foundation of our energy generation portfolio in Montana. In 2023, 35.7% of our electricity for Montana customers came from our hydro facilities.

NorthWestern Energy warns of widespread aggressive scam activity

Butte, Mont., Sioux Falls, S.D. – Sept. 8, 2022 – NorthWestern Energy customers have reported more than 400 attempts by scammers to steal their money since Sept. 1.
The criminals are calling from spoofed phone numbers with state area codes and local prefixes. Customers say the scammers threaten to disconnect service in 30 minutes unless an immediate payment is made.
Energy companies will never threaten their customers. Accounts with past-due balances received multiple notices in advance of a service disconnection.
NorthWestern Energy personnel report each phone number to authorities to shut the numbers down, however this amount of scam activity is unusually high. Our customers should be vigilant about protecting themselves, their family members and neighbors from becoming victims of this scam.
