Working Together to Create Sustainable Energy

We are committed to providing responsible, sustainable energy to meet our customers' needs, while protecting, and even enhancing, the natural environment. We are vigilant in monitoring the impacts of our operations on the environment, in complying with the spirit, as well as the letter of environmental requirements, and responsibly managing natural resources under our stewardship.

Innovating Our Energy Future

NorthWestern Energy’s policy is to provide cost-effective, reliable and stably priced energy while being good stewards of natural resources and complying with environmental regulations.

NorthWestern Energy dedicates time and resources toward providing sustainable energy options for our customers. Wind generation, hydro generation, and solar generations are among the main project areas for sustainable energy.

The backbone of NorthWestern’s generation is its fleet of 10 hydroelectric generation stations and one storage reservoir. Wind generation continues to become a larger part of NorthWestern’s electric supply portfolio. We are building solar pilot projects that are designed to test various types of solar-related technology to further our knowledge of how this generation can be integrated into our electricity portfolio. We have committed to funding four solar projects that combined will help us evaluate the potential for solar to help meet our needs for reliable, affordable clean energy that benefits all customers.

Solar Pilot Projects

Energy produced from the sun is similar in some ways to wind energy and different in others. So, we’re building pilot projects at various locations that are designed to test different types of solar-related technology to further our knowledge of how this generation can be integrated into our electricity portfolio. We have committed to funding projects that will allow us to evaluate the potential for solar to help meet our needs for reliable, affordable clean energy that benefits all customers.

Wind Generation

Wind generation continues to become a larger part of NorthWestern’s electric supply portfolio. At year-end 2021, more than 27% of our electric generation company wide came from wind.

Avian Conservation

NorthWestern Energy has a number of programs designed to protect avian species.

Learn about all our hydroelectric facilities

Nearly 60% of the energy we supply in Montana comes from carbon-free sources, thanks in large part to our hydroelectric facilities.

Net Zero by 2050

While staying true to our core responsibilities, we are also committing to achieve carbon neutrality in our electric and natural gas operations by 2050.
